When we talk to participants about how they would like to be seen by others, they often have a clear idea of what that is. They share a range of descriptive terms outlining the behaviours they’d like to be known for, which typically include words such as honest, approachable, fair, trusting, hardworking etc.
All perfectly admirable but when pushed, it’s not quite so easy to articulate how they actually demonstrate these qualities on a regular basis.
Take approachable for example. Just saying ‘my door is always open’ or ‘if you have any problems, give me a shout’, is very different to actually ‘living’ it.
This requires proactivity, visibility and above all, consistency.
Focus on initiating conversations, listening, asking for input, accepting advice, encouraging transparency, rather than meaningless words.
Whatever it is you want to be known for – demonstrate it, live it!
